What Actually Happens at Your Starting Point at LEAP: A Walk-Through

Your Starting Point at LEAP is the entry path you choose — Personal Training or Team Training. It begins with a 45-minute one-on-one LEAP Onboarding Session: not a workout, not a sales meeting. Your coach screens how you move, walks through your goals, history, schedule, and any limitations, then builds your training plan. Your coached training starts after that, in the sessions included in your Starting Point — and you don't decide on a membership until you've actually trained with us.
The promise: no membership decision before you've trained with us
Most gyms ask you to sign a contract before you've ever moved in their space.
LEAP doesn't.
Your Starting Point is a one-time purchase, not a membership. It includes everything you need to experience how LEAP coaches — your Onboarding Session and the coached training sessions in your package — before you commit to anything beyond it.
That structure isn't a sales technique. It's how we make sure the program is the right fit before either side commits.
Step 1: Choose and book your Starting Point
Everyone starts by choosing the entry path that fits:
Personal Training Starting Point — the fastest, most personalized path. One-on-one coaching, a full movement assessment, and a completely customized plan. Includes two 50-minute private sessions.
Team Training Starting Point — our structured small-group system (Team Strength Sessions and Team Peak Performance Sessions) with coaching and accountability. Includes a 2-week team training experience.
Booking takes about 60 seconds on the website. Most members start with Personal Training to build a plan, then move into Team Training for long-term consistency — but there's no wrong door here.
We limit onboarding spots each month so every new member gets real coaching attention from the start, which is why bookings sometimes fill a few weeks out.
Step 2: Schedule your LEAP Onboarding Session
Once you've booked, you'll schedule your LEAP Onboarding Session through the LEAP app (powered by TeamUp). Most members get their Onboarding Session within a week of booking.
This is the step that gets everything dialed in for you. Here's exactly what it is — and what it isn't.
Step 3: Inside the Onboarding Session — what we do and why
Your LEAP Onboarding Session is a 45-minute, one-on-one meeting. It is not a sales consultation, and it is not a workout. It's the assessment-and-planning step where your coach gets the full picture of you and builds your plan.
We talk through:
Your goals and motivation — what brought you in, what you want, and why it matters
Your health and training history — past or current injuries, conditions, what you've done before, and what you've enjoyed or dreaded
Your lifestyle and schedule — your work, how often you realistically want to train, and the days and times that actually work
How you're fueling — a quick read on nutrition relative to your goals
Then we screen how you move. Your coach runs a condensed Functional Movement Screen (FMS) — a standardized look at movement quality, not how much you can lift. That includes checks like shoulder mobility, an overhead squat, trunk stability, and screens for shoulder or back irritation. We're looking for where you move well, where there's something to work on, and where load can start safely.
Why all of this: the right program is the one that fits your real body and your real week — not an imaginary one. The screen and the conversation are how we learn what that program should be.
There's no training in the Onboarding Session itself. You don't need to be "in shape" for it, and you don't need to prepare. Just show up ready to talk and move through a few simple patterns.
Step 4: Get your program recommendation
By the end of the session, your coach turns everything into a recommendation:
Which path fits — Personal Training, Team Training, or Barbell Club
How often you should train
What progression looks like over your first few months
How LEAP memberships work, and the tier that matches your goals
We recommend the path forward based on what your body tells us — not on what we want to sell you. And you don't decide anything on the spot.
Step 5: Experience training — the sessions in your Starting Point
This is where you actually train.
Your coached training happens in the sessions included in your Starting Point — the two 50-minute private sessions in the Personal Training path, or the 2-week team training experience in the Team path. Each one is built around what we saw in your Onboarding Session: appropriate to your level, your history, and your goals.
You'll feel coached. You'll feel like you did something real. You won't feel demolished. This is the first true taste of what training at LEAP feels like.
Step 6: Decide on your membership — after you've trained
Only after you've completed your Starting Point and seen how the coaching works in your own week do you choose a long-term membership.
No auto-renew. No decision under pressure on day one. If LEAP isn't the right fit, we'll say so — and where we can, point you toward what is.
What to wear, what to bring, where we're located
What to wear: Anything you'd train in. Athletic shoes, comfortable layers if you run hot or cold.
What to bring: Water. That's it.
Where we are: 1057 W Belmont Ave, East Lakeview Chicago — steps from the Belmont CTA station, with street parking nearby.
What members say after they start
The most common reaction after the Onboarding Session and first sessions is some version of: "That wasn't what I expected."
What they mean is — it didn't feel like a sales process, and it didn't feel like a test. It felt like a coach who actually paid attention and built something around them.
That's the point.
Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens in my LEAP Onboarding Session? It's a 45-minute, one-on-one meeting — not a sales consultation and not a workout. Your coach runs a condensed Functional Movement Screen, walks through your goals, training history, schedule, and any injuries or limitations, then builds the training plan that's unique to you. Your coached training begins afterward, in the sessions included in your Starting Point.
Is the Onboarding Session a workout? No. The Onboarding Session is the assessment-and-planning step — there's no training in it. Your actual training happens in the coached sessions included in your Starting Point package.
What's included in my Starting Point? Your LEAP Onboarding Session plus the coached training in your package: two 50-minute private sessions on the Personal Training path, or a 2-week team training experience on the Team Training path.
Do I have to commit to a membership to get started? No. Your Starting Point is a one-time purchase with no long-term commitment and no auto-renew. You only choose a membership after you've trained with us and seen how the system fits your week.
What if I haven't trained in years — or ever? That's exactly who the Onboarding Session is for. We meet you where you are today, not where you think you should be, and scale your plan to your current strength, mobility, and movement quality.
What if I'm working around an injury or medical condition? Tell us in your Onboarding Session. We assess your movement, ask about your history and limitations, and build your plan around what your body needs. If you're working with a doctor or physical therapist, we follow their guidance — we don't replace medical care, we build coaching that respects it.
Final takeaway
A clear, honest first step is the biggest indicator of whether a coaching program will actually work for you.
Your Starting Point at LEAP is built for exactly that: a 45-minute Onboarding Session to assess you and build your plan, then real coached training — with no membership decision until you've experienced it firsthand.
We limit onboarding spots each month to maintain a high level of coaching.
Book Your Starting Point and meet the team that would be coaching you — before any membership decision happens.
